AEW Games for Console and Khan's Soul

Hi everybody, and WELCOME to a FULL GEAR celebrating, power shift rebalancing, John Cena flexing, Chris Jericho rendering episode of the Brothers of Discussion! We’re going to talk the Wednesday Night Wars, update you on Eric Bugenhagen, Matt’s got a new Undertaker Time’s Up game, and probably wax poetic about Eddie Kingston. That and maybe 4 more things.

This week in Pro Wrestling we're talking about a shift in the balance of power in the industry of pro wrestling, the Wednesday Night Wars on November 11th, 2020, AEW Games announcement, Indi Hartwell, Leon Ruff, Dexter Lumis, the Bastard Pac.

AEW Games

There were two different games played by AEW this week. One, I think we were all eagerly awaiting and figured it was just a matter of time and the other had us eagerly awaiting the end of TNT’s flagship wrestling program AEW Dynamite, only to be disappointed.

Console and Mobile Games for AEW

Now, the AEW Games announcement was huge. I could not be more excited to play a game that harkens back to the days of WWF No Mercy. That was a game that came out while I was in high school and actually stopped watching Pro Wrestling. Despite that, I still bought the game and played it non-stop. It really is one of the perfect wrestling games for its accessibility, storytelling, and use of the industry.

It also has to just be exciting that Kenny Omega, who has been attached to so many different video game content over the last decade, was featured so prominently. You have to figure that a game like WWE 2K would not have performed so poorly had a guy like Xavier Woods been able to get his hands dirty in the behind scenes work.

This is surely something that we need more information on before we get too excited because talk is cheap. And oh boy did we learn that AEW is capable of giving us dirt cheap conversation.

Tony KHan Falling Short of Delivery

AEW Dynamite was a phenomenal show, this past Wednesday. But in no way did it deserve to put on the pedastal of lofty expectations, that TOny Khan decided to create. Heading into the night, Khan let the world know that the balance of power in the industry was going to change. Its easy to see how a statement like that could make one’s mind race to conclusions.

I went as far as to joke that Khan went out and bought WWE and he was about to reveal his big purchase later that night.

Unfortunately, Tony’s Dad wasn’t ready to fork over more cash to the kids, because all we got for trusting Tony Khan was the return of a pro wrestler who had already wrestled for AEW, in the Bastard PAC. The other reveal was that SHAQ wanted to fight Cody Rhodes, but judging by the voices on Twitter, none were too impressed.

BOth Pac and Shaq are by no means terrible moves by AEW. They are great. But when compared to the Industry Rattling news we were supposed to get, this made us all beg for more and feel misled. Rather than the night is about the Bastard making his triumphant return, the story of the night was the Internet Wrestling Community realizing that Tony Khan was only a promoter. And as any good promoter, he did what he had to do to keep folks in the seats and fans glued to the television.

He’s not a bad person in any way for wanting his company to succeed, but letting my hopes and expectations get the best of me is something wrestling has done to me too many times. It just felt like this was the first time we were truly duped by Tony Khan, instead of a McMahon.

It’s fair to say that when things like this pop up anywhere, one thing usually leads to another. So when Tony saw how much we were talking about AEW on social media, he realized it would be a good idea to try something like this again. Hopefully, he doesn’t do it and he lets his product speak for itself. But my best guess doesn’t paint a positive outcome in that regard.
