Are the Red Wings Officially Tanking?

Hi everybody and welcome to Episode 23 of Season 2 of Red Wings Rant hosted by the Brothers of Discussion and brought to you by the Hockey Podcast Network.  Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings, finally, have a home.

The Detroit Red Wings turned in their 3rd worst defensive game of the season against the Nashville Predators (from an xGA/60 perspective) and Jonathan Bernier played his nuts off again.

We also discuss Steve Yzerman’s press conference, where he subtly suggested the Wings are open for business and also stated that Goals and Assists are instinct (in one fail swoop backing Blashill and trashing his forwards).

We also have Grant, from Hungry for Hawks Talk, on to discuss the upcoming series with the Chicago Blackhawks and if the Red Wings can finally overcome their Original Six and Mid-Western rivals.

Red Wings Get Goaltending and Nothing Else Against Nashville

We definitely have an identity, but that strategy and the game plan were completely shattered in Tuesday’s game against the Predators.

The Red Wings gave up their third-worst xGA/60 performance of the year and it showed. Despite the performance and nearly 3 xGA, it was Jonathan Bernier who came to play for the Red Wings and allowed zero goals during 5-on-5 situations. Unfortunately, it was special teams that left the WIngs and Bernier’s shot at a shutout on the cutting room floor.

Regardless, Bernier had to stand on his head to keep this game close and more folks should be discussing the complete lack of reliable offense this team puts on the ice.

Steve Yzerman said himself, during a press conference earlier in the week, that goals and assists come on instinct. Basically, if you’ve got it, you’ve got it. Yzerman could be subtly stating his disappointment in the roster or simply be making an off-the-cuff statement about hockey.

Regardless, this team isn’t scoring and none are making a case to be ushered into elite status or to be protected during the trade deadline or the expansion draft. We discuss more on the podcast, so click above to hear more!

Red Wings vs Blackhawks Series

We also preview the third series of the season with the Chicago Blackhawks. Grant, from Hungry for Hawks Talk is here to discuss potential award-winning seasons for Kevin Lankenin and Patrick Kane as well as discuss how the victories over the Red Wings have brought in a fighting spirit to the Chicago locker room.

We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed on the Wings finding their first victory of the season over the Blackhawks, but the WIngs will be hoping for quite a few things to go differently, based on their first four meetings.
